Nigeria's translation picture is unusual. English is the federal language. So most federal-level paperwork already arrives in English: NPC birth certificates, university degrees, police clearance certificates. None of that needs translating. The work shows up further down the chain — on traditional, regional, or local-government documents in Yoruba, Hausa, or Igbo. That's where applicants get tripped up.
Do Nigerian documents need translation for UK visas?
Many Nigerian official documents are already in English and do not need translation. But traditional marriage certificates, local government documents in Yoruba, Hausa, or Igbo, and some court documents may need certified translation.
English is Nigeria's federal language. So most government-issued papers come ready to use: NPC birth certificates, federal university diplomas, NPF police clearance certificates, NYSC certificates. The translation work sits below the federal level. Local government area certificates, customary marriage records, and court papers from local courts are where Yoruba, Hausa, or Igbo show up.
Traditional marriage certificates are the most common edge case. Many Nigerian communities recognise customary marriages alongside civil ones. The certificates can be in Yoruba (Southwest), Hausa (North), Igbo (Southeast), or another regional language. UKVI accepts customary marriages for spouse visas. But only with a certified translation if the certificate isn't already in English.

Which Nigerian documents are usually in English?
Nigerian National Population Commission (NPC) birth certificates, federal university degree certificates, police clearance certificates, and most bank statements are usually issued in English. They do not need translation.
