Financial documents are where translations get scrutinised hardest. A caseworker, underwriter or accountant isn't reading for gist: they're checking figures, dates, names and account numbers against each other, with the focus of people who reconcile things for a living. One mistranslated deduction or an untranslated transaction description is enough to stall an application.

We translate every kind of financial document from any language, each with a signed statement of accuracy and the translator's details. Start with the guides below for bank statements, payslips, tax returns, employment letters and mortgage documents, or upload whatever you have for an instant quote.

Which financial documents need certified translation in the UK?

Any financial document you submit to a UK authority or institution that isn't in English. The most common are bank statements, payslips, tax returns, employment letters and pension statements, for visa applications, mortgages, tax matters and court proceedings.

UKVI requires a certified translation of every foreign-language document in a visa application, and financial evidence is usually the largest part of the file. UK mortgage lenders and brokers ask for certified translations of foreign income and deposit evidence. Accountants need foreign tax documents in English to prepare your UK return. And in UK family proceedings, financial disclosure that includes overseas accounts, pensions or property needs translating before the court can rely on it; our legal translation team covers court work.

The rule travels well, too. Immigration New Zealand also needs English translations of financial evidence that isn't in English: see bank statement translation for New Zealand.

  • Visa applications — spouse, partner, student, Skilled Worker, ILR
  • Mortgages and remortgages — income and deposit evidence
  • Tax — foreign income and tax paid abroad
  • Courts — financial disclosure in family and civil proceedings
  • Employers, landlords and letting agents — income verification

What financial evidence does a UK spouse visa need?

It depends on how the £29,000 financial requirement is met. Salaried sponsors use payslips, an employer letter and matching bank statements; self-employed sponsors use tax returns, accounts and business statements; others rely on cash savings, pension income or non-employment income such as rent or dividends.

The rules in Appendix FM-SE set out the evidence for each way of meeting the requirement, and the translation need follows from that. Employed sponsors typically need payslips, an employer letter and bank statements covering the same six or twelve months. Self-employed sponsors usually need tax returns and business records. Cash savings have to have been held for at least six months.

Combinations are common, such as a salary plus rental income from a flat abroad, and each source brings its own documents. Appendix FM-SE is not light reading, but it is at least specific. See spouse visa translation for the rest of the file, which usually also includes civil documents such as a divorce certificate translation if either of you was married before.

  • Salaried employment: payslips, employer letter, bank statements
  • Self-employment: tax returns, accounts, business bank statements
  • Cash savings: statements showing funds held for six months or more
  • Pension: pension statements or award letters
  • Non-employment income: rental agreements, dividend or investment statements

Do you translate pension statements, company accounts and investment statements?

Yes. We translate pension statements and award letters, company accounts and annual filings, brokerage and share statements, and loan agreements from any country, at the same per-page rate as every other document.

These documents tend to be dense with technical terms, such as vesting, accruals, retained earnings and dividend withholding, that have precise meanings and no patience for approximation. Our translators work with financial documents routinely and add a short note where a local term has no exact UK equivalent, rather than guessing at one.

Loan agreements come up in two directions. Student visa applicants can sometimes rely on an education loan from a financial institution as maintenance evidence, and the loan letter needs translating if it isn't in English. Mortgage applicants with existing loans abroad may be asked to show those commitments, so the lender can factor them into affordability.

How is a multi-document financial file priced?

Every page is charged at the same rate, from £15.59 per page, whatever the language or document type. Upload your documents for an instant quote showing the page count and total before you pay.

A typical spouse-visa financial file might be six payslips, a one-page employer letter and several months of bank statements. The payslips and letter alone are seven pages, or £109.13; the statements add whatever page count your bank produces. There's no minimum order, no surcharge for scripts like Arabic or Chinese, and the statement of accuracy is included.

Ordering the whole file together is quicker and more consistent than ordering piecemeal: one translator team, one spelling of every name, one set of conventions for dates and figures. Piecemeal orders are how one person ends up with three spellings of their own surname. Same-day rush is available at £29.99 per page.

What makes a financial translation hold up to scrutiny?

Completeness and consistency. Every figure, date and transaction description translated; the original currency kept; names spelled the same way across every document; and a signed statement of accuracy from a qualified translator.

Financial reviewers cross-check. They match payslip to bank credit, salary to employer letter, declared income to tax assessment. A translation that converts currencies, merges deduction lines or leaves descriptions untranslated makes those checks harder, and harder checks become queries. 'Too complete' is not a complaint caseworkers tend to make.

We work to an ISO 17100-certified process, we're a member of the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), and our translators hold qualifications recognised to ATA standards. Every translation carries the translator's details and signed statement of accuracy, and if a UK institution queries it because of our error, we correct it free of charge.

  • Every line translated — no summaries
  • Original currency and figures preserved
  • Date and decimal conventions noted
  • Names consistent with your passport across all documents
  • ISO 17100-certified process, ATC member
