Divorce certificate translation tends to arrive at a hopeful moment: you're remarrying, sponsoring a new partner or settling in the UK, and the file has to show that an earlier marriage has properly ended. If the decree or certificate isn't in English, UKVI and UK register offices need a certified English translation of it, and they read it closely.

We translate divorce certificates, court judgments and legally registered religious divorces from any country as part of our certified translation service. Most people order theirs alongside a marriage certificate translation for the new marriage. For the trickier cases, such as talaq divorces or decrees that were never finalised, our guide to divorce decree translation for remarriage goes into more depth.

Divorce Documents We Translate

Whatever form your divorce took, the document that ended it can be translated in full and certified, including every stamp, seal and annotation.

How to Translate a Divorce Certificate for UKVI

Three steps, no posting of originals and no notarisation for UKVI.

  1. 1

    Upload the full decree

Send a clear photo or scan of every page, including the back of any page with stamps or a finality certificate. A readable copy is enough.

  2. 2

    We translate and certify it

A qualified translator renders the whole document, finality wording included, and signs a statement of accuracy with their full name, contact details and the date.

  3. 3

Receive your PDF in 24 hours

Your certified divorce certificate translation arrives as a PDF within 24 business hours, ready for UKVI, a register office or your solicitor.

Do I need my divorce certificate translated for a UK spouse visa?

Yes, if it isn't in English or Welsh. If you or your partner were married or in a civil partnership before, UKVI needs evidence that the earlier relationship has ended, and any foreign-language divorce document must come with a certified translation.

For the partner routes, UKVI has to be satisfied that any previous marriage or civil partnership of either of you has broken down permanently, and the cleanest evidence is the document that legally ended it. That applies to your partner's earlier marriage just as much as yours. A divorce certificate is rarely the star of a spouse visa translation file, but its absence gets noticed quickly.

The same translation keeps working after the visa. Settlement and citizenship applications ask about your relationship history, and a register office will want the decree before it takes notice of a new marriage. Translate it once, properly, and keep the PDF with your other civil documents.

  • Spouse, partner and fiancé(e) visas, for either partner's previous marriage
  • Giving notice of marriage or civil partnership at a UK register office
  • Settlement (ILR) and citizenship applications
  • Dependant applications where a parent's marital history matters
  • Changing your name back on UK records after a divorce

Which divorce document does UKVI accept?

The final document that legally ended the marriage in the country where the divorce took place. In England and Wales that is the Final Order (formerly the Decree Absolute); elsewhere it is usually the court's final judgment, a civil-registry divorce certificate or, for a registered religious divorce, the official certificate that made it effective. An interim decree or the original petition is not enough.

Divorce is a process, and most countries produce paperwork at every stage. Only the last piece proves the marriage has ended. In civil-law countries that's often the judgment plus a certificate or stamp confirming it has become final. For a Pakistani or Bangladeshi talaq, it's the Union Council's certificate of effectiveness, with the talaq nama and notices as supporting documents. The most important words on the page are often the shortest ones: final, irrevocable, not subject to appeal. We translate them exactly as written.

A religious divorce that was never registered under the civil law of the country where it happened won't satisfy UKVI, however well it's translated. If you're unsure which document you hold, upload what you have and we'll tell you what it is before you pay. Applying abroad as well? Do I need a translated divorce certificate to give notice of marriage?

Yes, if you were married or in a civil partnership before and the proof isn't in English. When you give notice at a UK register office you must show the earlier relationship ended, for example with a decree absolute, final order or a former partner's death certificate, and bring a translation of any document that isn't in English.

Notice has to be given at least 29 days before the ceremony, and a divorce granted outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man adds a step: the register office checks it, and some cases are sent to the General Register Office, with an extra fee for either. That review can't start until the documents are readable, so have the translation ready before your notice appointment rather than after it. Register offices are warm about weddings and entirely unsentimental about paperwork.

After the ceremony, the new marriage certificate becomes the headline document for a spouse visa, and the translated decree sits behind it as proof you were free to marry.

Do I need a translation to apply for a divorce in England and Wales?

Yes, if your marriage certificate isn't in English. The court asks for a translation of it with your divorce application, certified by a notary or verified by the translator with a Statement of Truth. Our court option provides a named translator and a Statement of Truth for exactly this.

Court work has its own format. Rather than a company certificate, the court expects to know which individual translated the document and to have them confirm it with a Statement of Truth. Choose the court, divorce or family proceedings option when you order: it's £41.99 per page and covers marriage certificates for divorce applications, foreign divorce judgments used in family or financial proceedings, and other documents going before a UK court. Our legal translation page explains the court format in more detail.

If the divorce is for an immigration application rather than a court, the standard certified translation is the right one, and it's cheaper.

  • Marriage certificates for a divorce or dissolution application
  • Foreign divorce judgments used in UK family or financial proceedings
  • Named translator with a Statement of Truth
  • Standard certified translation for UKVI and register offices

How much does divorce certificate translation cost?

Divorce certificate translation costs from £15.59 per page for UKVI and register-office use. A one-page civil-registry certificate usually comes to £15.59 in total; a longer court judgment or a talaq file is charged at the same per-page rate.

Divorce documents vary more than most. A civil-registry certificate is often one page. A court judgment that sets out the parties, the grounds and the arrangements can run to three or four, which is £46.77 to £62.36. A talaq file with the talaq nama, the Union Council notices and the certificate of effectiveness is usually a few pages too. There's no surcharge for language or script, and the statement of accuracy and PDF delivery are included.

If your notice appointment or visa deadline is close, same-day rush is £29.99 per page. Upload the documents and you'll see the page count and total before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Divorce Certificate Translation UK

Is a decree nisi or conditional order enough for UKVI?

No. A decree nisi or conditional order is an interim step; the marriage only ends with the decree absolute or final order. The same applies abroad: translate the final judgment or certificate, not an earlier stage of the case.

Will UKVI accept a religious divorce?

Only if it is recognised under the law of the country where it took place, which usually means it was registered with the civil authorities. A talaq certified by a Pakistani Union Council, for example, is a legal divorce. A purely religious divorce with no civil registration is not, and a translation can't change that.

Do you translate talaq documents from Pakistan and Bangladesh?

Yes. We translate the talaq nama, the notice to the Union Council or arbitration council and the certificate of effectiveness, from Urdu or Bengali, as one consistent set.

My country records divorces as a note on the marriage certificate. Is that enough?

Some countries record a divorce as an annotation on the marriage or birth record. We translate the whole record, annotations included. If a separate final judgment or divorce certificate also exists, include it too, as it is the document UKVI and register offices most often expect.

Do I need my partner's divorce documents translated as well?

Yes, if your partner was married before and the documents aren't in English. UKVI needs evidence that any previous relationship of either partner has ended, so translate both sets in the same order.

Can you leave out the parts about children or finances?

Not for UKVI, which expects a complete translation of each document you submit. We translate the full judgment exactly as written. Your documents are handled only by the people working on your order and are used for nothing else.

Do I need a notarised divorce certificate translation?

Not for UKVI or register offices: a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy is what they ask for. For a UK court, choose our court option with a named translator and a Statement of Truth.

How long does divorce certificate translation take?

Standard delivery is within 24 business hours. Same-day rush is available if your notice appointment or visa application is close.

Can I upload a photo of the decree?

Yes. A clear phone photo or scan works, as long as every page, stamp and signature is readable. You never need to post the original.

The names on my decree are spelled differently from my passport. What happens?

Tell us your passport spelling when you order, so the names in the translation match the rest of your application. Names that are transliterated from another script often have more than one accepted spelling, and we'll use yours.

What if UKVI or the register office queries the translation?

Every document includes 2 free revisions. Send us the query and we'll update the translation at no cost.
