Certified Divorce Certificate Translation for Ireland

Full English translations of foreign divorce decrees and certificates for marriage notification, the General Register Office and Irish immigration applications.

A certified divorce certificate translation for Ireland is a complete English version of your foreign divorce decree or certificate, signed and dated by the translator, for the Civil Registration Service, the General Register Office (GRO) or Immigration Service Delivery (ISD). VisaDocTranslation prepares it at €19.19 per page, in euro, delivered by the next working day.

Most people need one for one of two reasons: they're remarrying in Ireland, or an Irish application asks them to show how a previous marriage ended. Either way, the decree is translated in full, including the judgment pages and any finality stamps. More on Irish requirements is on our certified translation for Ireland page.

Do I need a translated divorce decree to get married in Ireland?

Yes, if the decree isn't in English or Irish. When you give the Registrar three months' notice, you bring the final decree for every previous divorce, with translations of anything not in English or Irish. If the divorce was granted abroad, contact the Registrar beforehand for instructions.

The Registrar can't issue a Marriage Registration Form until they're satisfied there's no impediment to the marriage, and a previous marriage is the obvious question. Foreign divorces are examined by the General Register Office to decide whether they can be recognised in Ireland, so the translation needs to show everything the GRO might look at: the court or authority, both parties, the dates and the confirmation that the decree is final.

The HSE checklist asks for the original or a certified copy of the decree, plus a photocopy, and any stay order. Include every page when you upload. Notice periods are long enough already without restarting the clock over a missing page.

Will Ireland recognise my foreign divorce?

Recognition is decided by the Irish authorities, not by the translation. Citizens Information says divorces from most EU member states are generally recognised automatically, and a divorce from outside the EU is usually recognised if one spouse was living permanently in the country that granted it when proceedings began.

That's the general position, and each case is assessed on its own facts. Our part is the translation: an accurate, complete English version that lets the GRO, a Registrar or a court see exactly what the foreign decree says, including the addresses and residence details that recognition often turns on.

If your circumstances are more complicated, for example the divorce was granted somewhere neither of you was living, it's worth speaking to a solicitor before you give notice. We translate the decree; we don't advise on whether it will be recognised.

Do I need a divorce certificate translation for an Irish visa or citizenship application?

Often, yes. Join-family and citizenship applications ask about marital history, and a divorce decree that isn't in English or Irish needs a full certified translation with the translator's signed confirmation, the date and contact details.

ISD's join-family checklists treat divorce certificates like birth and marriage certificates: ones issued outside the EEA or Switzerland should be attested or apostilled by the issuing country's foreign ministry, and translations made outside the EEA or Switzerland should be attested where the translation was done. Our translations are made in the UK, so if your checklist includes that step, message us before ordering to ask whether an apostilled translation is available.

When a divorce is followed by a new marriage, it usually makes sense to translate both together; see marriage certificate translation for Ireland.

How much does a divorce certificate translation for Ireland cost?

€19.19 per page for next-working-day delivery, or €35.99 per page for rush delivery within 8 hours. Short divorce certificates are often one page; full court decrees can run to several.

Every page includes the translation, the signed certification and a quality check, and each document comes with 2 free revisions. If you're unsure whether to send the short certificate or the full judgment, ask the Registrar or check your ISD checklist first; the full decree tells the whole story, but it's only worth translating if someone has asked to read it.

We translate decrees from civil courts, registry offices and administrative divorces, including the ones recorded as an annotation on a marriage record. Upload on the quote form to see the total before you pay.

What should a translated divorce decree include for Ireland?

The whole document: the court or authority, both parties, the dates of filing and decree, any finality or appeal notice, and every stamp and signature, followed by the translator's signed statement, the date and their contact details.

Names matter here more than usual, because the decree has to connect to your marriage certificate, your passport and, if you're remarrying, your new partner's documents. Tell us the passport spellings when you order; our guide to names spelled differently across documents explains how we handle variations.

If you changed your name after the divorce, the Registrar or ISD may want to see that trail as well. Our page on passport and ID card translation for Ireland covers name-change documents.

Frequently Asked Questions About Divorce Certificate Translation for Ireland

Who decides whether my foreign divorce is recognised in Ireland?

For marriage notification, the General Register Office examines foreign divorces to decide whether they can be recognised. A translation supports that decision but doesn't make it, and a solicitor can advise on complex cases.

Do I need the full divorce judgment or just the certificate?

It depends on who's asking. The Civil Registration Service asks for the final decree; ISD sets its own checklist. Check what your Registrar or checklist specifies before ordering, so you only translate what's needed.

Is a divorce from an EU country simpler?

Generally, yes. Citizens Information says divorces from most EU member states are recognised automatically, and ISD says a translation isn't required for an EU-issued divorce certificate accompanied by a Multilingual Standard Form.

Can I bring a copy of the decree to the Registrar?

The HSE checklist asks for the original or a certified copy of the decree, plus a photocopy. Bring the certified translation with them.

Does the divorce translation need to be notarised for Ireland?

Irish immigration and civil registration guidance generally asks for a certified translation. If a court or other body asks for more, check exactly what it needs before you order.

How long does a divorce certificate translation take?

Standard orders are delivered by the next working day and rush orders within 8 hours, as a PDF by email.

Do you translate handwritten annotations on a divorce record?

Yes. Handwritten notes, marginal annotations and stamps are all translated. If anything is illegible, we mark it as illegible rather than guess, and we'll ask you first if it affects the meaning.
