Marriage Certificate Translation into Japanese

A complete Japanese translation of your marriage certificate, signed by a named professional translator, for reporting the marriage to Japan or supporting a spouse residence application.

A marriage certificate translation into Japanese is what Japan usually asks for when a couple marries outside Japan and one partner is Japanese. VisaDocTranslation translates the whole certificate, including registrar's notes and witnesses, and a named professional translator signs it with their full name, contact details and qualifications.

It's £41.99 per page with next-working-day delivery. Because requirements vary between the embassy, consulates and municipal offices, check the list for the office you're using; our Japanese translation overview has the general picture.

Do I need to report a UK marriage to Japan?

Yes, if one partner is a Japanese national. A marriage registered in the UK should be reported to the Embassy of Japan, a consulate or a municipal office in Japan within three months, using a 婚姻届 with the UK marriage certificate and a Japanese translation.

Marrying under British law makes the marriage valid in the UK, but it doesn't appear in the Japanese partner's family register (戸籍) until it's reported. The report is the 婚姻届, the same form used for marriages in Japan, and it's supported by the marriage certificate, a Japanese translation and identity documents for both partners. The non-Japanese partner's passport usually needs translating as well, so it's worth ordering both together.

Two countries, two sets of paperwork, one wedding. The good news is that the Japanese side mostly wants to see the UK certificate in Japanese rather than a fresh set of vows.

Which marriage documents need Japanese translation for a spouse visa?

For a Spouse or Child of Japanese National status of residence, the Immigration Services Agency generally asks for proof of marriage from both countries: the Japanese partner's family register showing the marriage and the marriage certificate issued abroad. Any foreign-language document must have a Japanese translation attached.

The family register shows Japan's record of the marriage; the UK certificate shows the original. Together they let the immigration officer see that the marriage is recognised in both countries. Spouses of foreign residents applying for Dependent status also use marriage certificates to prove the relationship.

The Agency's rule is straightforward: foreign-language documents need a Japanese translation, and the translator should be identified. Ours are signed by a named translator. The Agency also looks closely at the genuineness of a marriage, so expect other evidence beyond the certificate, which is the part no translation can do for you.

What does a Japanese marriage certificate translation include?

Everything on the certificate: both partners' names, ages, occupations and addresses, fathers' or parents' names, the venue, the date, the witnesses and the registrar's signature and notes. Names of foreign nationals are normally rendered in katakana.

UK marriage certificates have a lot of columns, and the newer ones in England and Wales record both parents of each partner rather than only fathers. Scottish certificates have their own layout again. We translate whatever is on your version, including handwritten entries and certification stamps.

If either of you has a katakana spelling already registered in Japan, give it to us when you order so the translation matches the family register. Family registers are unforgiving about this: as far as the paperwork is concerned, ブラウン and ブラウン゠スミス are two different people.

Do I need an apostille on a UK marriage certificate for Japan?

Some Japanese offices accept a certified copy of the UK marriage certificate with a Japanese translation; others ask for an FCDO apostille. Check with the office, and if an apostille is required, get it first so we can translate it along with the certificate.

An apostille confirms the signature on a UK public document, and Japan accepts them as a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. It doesn't change what the certificate says, but it adds a page that usually needs translating too. Our apostille translation page explains the order of play.

If you're marrying in Japan rather than in the UK, the paperwork looks different: the non-Japanese partner typically provides documents such as a passport, a birth certificate and proof of legal capacity to marry to the municipal office. See birth certificate translation into Japanese for the birth certificate part.

How much does a marriage certificate translation into Japanese cost?

£41.99 per page, charged in pounds sterling, delivered by the next working day. There's no separate certification fee and no rush tier, because a named translator reviews and signs each translation.

Most UK marriage certificates are a single page. Add the passport identity page and any apostille to the same order and you'll see the total before you pay. Every document comes with 2 free revisions if the embassy or ward office asks for a change. We work to ISO 17100 and are members of the ATC.

Reporting the marriage usually means translating the non-Japanese partner's ID too, so see passport translation into Japanese. If a previous marriage ended in divorce, the office may also ask about that: see divorce certificate translation into Japanese. Ready? Use the quote form.

Frequently Asked Questions About Marriage Certificate Translation into Japanese

How long do we have to report a UK marriage to Japan?

Three months from the date of the marriage. The report is made with a 婚姻届 at the Embassy of Japan, a consulate or a municipal office in Japan.

Does the non-Japanese partner's passport also need translating?

Usually, yes. Offices generally ask for a Japanese translation of the passport identity page so they can record the name and nationality. Check the list for the office you're using.

Will you write our names in katakana?

Yes, foreign names are normally rendered in katakana. If a spelling is already registered in Japan, tell us and we'll use it.

Can we translate the marriage certificate ourselves?

Japanese offices often accept a translation signed by the person who made it. A professional translation is complete, consistent with your other documents and signed by a named translator, which saves a second trip if something is missed.

Do you translate Scottish and Northern Irish marriage certificates?

Yes. We translate marriage certificates from every part of the UK and from other English-speaking countries, whatever the layout.

Can you translate a civil partnership certificate into Japanese?

Yes, we can translate it. How a Japanese office treats a civil partnership is a separate question, so check with the receiving office before you order.

How much does it cost?

£41.99 per page, charged in pounds sterling, with 2 free revisions per document and no separate certification fee.

Is there a rush option?

No. Each translation is signed by a named translator, so delivery is by the next working day with no rush tier.
