When do I need a tax return translated into Japanese?

Mostly when a sponsor abroad is funding a stay in Japan, such as a parent supporting a student, or when you're self-employed and need to evidence income. If the school or office asks for a Japanese translation, it must accompany the original.

In Japan, income is usually proved with municipal tax certificates (課税証明書 and 納税証明書). If your income is taxed in the UK, you don't have those, so a school or office may ask for the UK equivalent instead: an SA302 tax calculation with its tax year overview, or a P60 for employees.

The translation makes the figures readable in Japanese; it doesn't turn an HMRC document into a Japanese tax certificate. The office decides what it accepts, so ask before ordering.

Which UK tax documents can you translate into Japanese?

SA302 tax calculations, tax year overviews, Self Assessment returns, P60 end-of-year certificates, P45s, P11Ds and letters from HMRC. We also translate tax documents from other English-speaking countries, such as US Form 1040 and W-2.

For self-employed sponsors, the SA302 and tax year overview together are the usual pair: one shows how the tax was calculated, the other confirms HMRC's records match. For employees, a P60 shows a year's pay and tax in one page, which is about as concise as HMRC ever gets.

Accountant-prepared figures, such as profit and loss accounts, can also be translated, but offices generally give more weight to documents issued by HMRC itself. If you've been asked for several years, upload them all on one order. Each page is translated in full, including notes and reference numbers.

How do you handle UK tax years in a Japanese translation?

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, while Japan's runs with the calendar year, so we translate the tax year exactly as stated rather than relabelling it. Dates are given as printed, so the reader can match them to the original.

A tax year written as 2025-26 covers parts of two calendar years, and a Japanese reader used to January-to-December tax years needs that spelled out rather than guessed. We translate the period in full so nobody mistakes it for a calendar year. The 6 April start has its roots in an eighteenth-century calendar change, which is a long time for a date to stay slightly odd.

Amounts stay in pounds sterling exactly as printed. We don't convert them into yen.

What else should I send with a tax return to prove income for Japan?

That depends on the application, but income evidence often travels with an employment letter, bank statements and, for a sponsor, proof of the relationship. Ask the school or office for its list.

A tax return shows income over a year; bank statements show the money is there now; an employment letter shows the income is likely to continue. Offices assessing financial support often want more than one of these.

How much does tax return translation into Japanese cost?

£41.99 per page, charged in pounds sterling and delivered by the next working day. There's no separate certification fee and no rush option.

An SA302 and tax year overview are usually two or three pages per year; a P60 is one. Full Self Assessment returns are longer, so check whether the office needs the whole return or the HMRC calculation. Every document includes 2 free revisions, and we work to ISO 17100.

Upload everything on the quote form and you'll see the total before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tax Return Translation into Japanese

Which is better for Japan, an SA302 or a full tax return?

Ask the office or school. Many applicants use the SA302 tax calculation and tax year overview because they're shorter and come directly from HMRC, but the receiving office decides what it accepts.

Do you translate P60s into Japanese?

Yes. A P60 shows a year's pay and tax on one page and is often the simplest income evidence for employees.

Do you convert pounds into yen?

No. Amounts are reproduced exactly as printed so they can be checked against the original.

Can you translate US tax returns into Japanese?

Yes. We translate Form 1040, W-2s and other tax documents from English-speaking countries into Japanese.

Can you translate my sponsor's tax documents for a student visa to Japan?

Yes. Parents and other sponsors often provide tax documents to show their income. We translate them alongside bank statements, employment letters and proof of the relationship on one order.

Is a UK tax return the same as a Japanese tax certificate?

No. A translation makes the UK document readable in Japanese but doesn't turn it into a Japanese municipal tax certificate. The receiving office decides whether it's suitable evidence.

How much does it cost?

£41.99 per page, charged in pounds sterling, with no separate certification fee and 2 free revisions per document.

How quickly will I get it?

By the next working day. A named translator reviews and signs each translation, so there's no rush tier.
