When do I need a bank statement translated into Japanese?

Most often for a Certificate of Eligibility as a student or dependant, where you must show how your stay in Japan will be funded. If the bank documents aren't in Japanese and the school or office asks for a translation, a Japanese translation needs to accompany them.

Japan asks applicants to show who will pay for their stay, a process known as 経費支弁 (expense support). For students, that usually means the applicant's own savings or a sponsor's, often a parent. For dependants, it typically means the supporting family member's income and savings. Business-related statuses can involve bank evidence too.

The Immigration Services Agency's rule is that foreign-language documents need a Japanese translation. Some schools that handle student COE applications accept English bank documents, so ask before translating a year of statements you may not need.

Should I translate a bank statement or a balance certificate for Japan?

Whichever the school or office asks for. Many Japanese applications ask for a bank balance certificate, a letter confirming the balance on a date, rather than months of transactions, and a balance letter is quicker and cheaper to translate.

UK banks will issue a balance confirmation letter on request, and it's often what a Japanese school means by a 預金残高証明書. Some offices also ask for statements showing how the money built up, especially for a large or recent deposit, because savings that appear overnight invite questions.

If you're asked for both, upload both. If you're not sure which one is wanted, ask the school before you order, because statements run to many pages and every page is priced.

What does a Japanese bank statement translation include?

Everything on the statement: account holder, account number, sort code, bank name and address, the statement period, every transaction description, and every balance. Amounts stay in the original currency.

We don't convert pounds into yen; the figures are reproduced exactly as printed so the reader can match them to the original. Transaction descriptions are translated or explained where they're meaningful, and reference codes are kept as they are.

Bank statements are the least exciting document in any file and the one officers read most closely. They're also where abbreviations like DD, SO and BGC live, which need translating into something a reader in Japan will recognise rather than reproducing as a mystery.

Can my parents' bank statements be used for my student visa to Japan?

Often, yes, if they are your financial sponsor. The school will usually ask for the sponsor's bank evidence, proof of their income and evidence of your relationship, with Japanese translations where requested.

Sponsor evidence is a set, not a single document. Alongside bank statements, you may need the sponsor's employment letter or tax return to show where the money comes from, plus a birth certificate to show the relationship. We can translate the lot on one order.

Count your pages before you order. A balance letter is usually one page, while three months of statements may be several. Online statements printed to PDF count by page too, so download the cleanest version your bank offers. Every document includes 2 free revisions, and we work to ISO 17100.

Upload everything on the quote form and you'll see the total before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bank Statement Translation into Japanese

Do Japanese schools accept English bank statements?

Some do. The Immigration Services Agency asks for Japanese translations of foreign-language documents, but schools that file student applications vary, so ask yours first.

Do you convert the amounts into yen?

No. Amounts stay in the original currency, exactly as printed, so they can be checked against the original statement.

Is a bank balance letter better than statements?

It depends what you've been asked for. Many Japanese applications ask for a balance certificate, which is shorter to translate. Some also want statements showing how the savings built up.

Can you translate my sponsor's bank statements?

Yes. We translate bank evidence for applicants and sponsors, along with income documents and proof of relationship.

Can you translate online banking statements?

Yes. Upload the PDF your bank provides. Each printed page counts as one page.

How much does it cost?

£41.99 per page, charged in pounds sterling, with no separate certification fee and 2 free revisions per document.

How quickly will I get it?

By the next working day. A named translator reviews and signs each translation, so there's no rush tier.

Are my financial details kept confidential?

Yes. Your statements are handled only by the people working on your order and used for nothing except your translation.
