Do I need to translate my passport for an Australian visa?

Often not the photo page, which on most passports already shows key details in English. You may need a translation of other pages, endorsements or a national identity card that isn't in English.

Most passports print field labels and your name in Roman characters, so the photo page is usually readable as it is. The rest of the book is another matter: observation pages, name endorsements, extension stamps and amendments are frequently in the issuing country's language only.

If Home Affairs needs to rely on any of that information, it needs translating. If you're unsure, check whether the page you're uploading has any detail that isn't in English. The passport will happily tell you the same thing in three languages and then add the important bit in a fourth.

Do I need to translate my national identity card for Home Affairs?

If you hold a national identity card and your application asks for it, any part that isn't in English needs an English translation. Upload a colour scan of both sides with the translation.

Many Home Affairs applications ask whether you hold a national identity card and, if so, for a copy. We translate both sides in full, including the issuing authority, card number, address fields and any stamps.

The same goes for other identity records countries use, such as household registers, family registers or residence registration certificates. If your checklist asks for one, send us the same version you'll upload.

  • National identity cards, front and back
  • Passport observation and endorsement pages
  • Household or family register extracts
  • Residence registration certificates
  • Change-of-name certificates and deed polls

Which identity documents does an Australian citizenship application need translated?

Citizenship applications ask for identity evidence and proof of any name change. Any of those documents that aren't in English need an English translation uploaded with the original.

Citizenship is where name changes come back to visit. If your name differs between your passport, birth record and visa grant, you'll want a clear paper trail. That usually means a birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a change-of-name record, translated so the names match across the set.

Tell us the spelling on your current passport when you order. We'll translate names as they appear on each document and keep transliteration consistent.

How do I upload a translated ID document to ImmiAccount?

Attach a high-quality colour scan of the original document, both sides, together with the English translation PDF under the relevant identity evidence item.

Scan each document separately. If you're translating several pages of a passport, scan those pages in order and send us the same scans so the translation follows them page by page.

You receive a signed PDF by email, ready to attach without any further steps.

If you're including family members in the application, each person's identity documents are translated separately, so every applicant's evidence item in ImmiAccount has its own matching translation. Tell us who each document belongs to when you upload and we'll label the files clearly.

How much does a passport or ID translation for Australia cost?

£41.99 per page, delivered by the next working day, with 2 free revisions per document. There's no rush option because a named translator reviews and signs every Australian translation.

An identity card front and back is usually charged as a single page. Passport endorsements and register extracts are charged per page, and the quote form shows the total before you pay, in pounds sterling.

Upload your scans on the quote form.
