Sworn Passport and ID Translation into Spanish

Passports, national ID cards, residence permits and name-change deeds translated into Spanish and signed by a traductor jurado, whenever a Spanish office asks for one.

A sworn passport and ID translation into Spanish is a traducción jurada of an identity document, signed by a traductor jurado appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The honest bit first: for most NIE, TIE and visa applications, Spanish offices take a UK passport as it is, with a photocopy, and no translation.

Translation becomes useful when the document isn't a standard passport: a deed poll, an annotation, a national ID card or a residence permit from another country. We translate those at £48.00 per page within 2 working days. Your passport will often sit next to a birth certificate and a marriage certificate, which are usually the documents that do need a sworn translation.

Do I need to translate my passport for an NIE or TIE in Spain?

Usually not. Applications for an NIE (número de identidad de extranjero) or a TIE (tarjeta de identidad de extranjero) generally ask for the original passport and a photocopy, not a translation. Check with the police station or extranjería office handling your appointment.

Passports follow an international standard: the data page uses the same fields everywhere, labelled in English and French on a UK passport, with a machine-readable zone underneath. It was designed so officials anywhere could read it without help, and it largely works. The Spanish consulate's non-lucrative visa checklist, for instance, asks for photocopies of the data page and every page with stamps, visas or annotations, and no translation.

If someone has told you to translate your passport just in case, ask the office first. We'd rather you spent the money on the documents that need it.

When does a Spanish office ask for a sworn translation of an ID document?

When the document isn't self-explanatory to a Spanish official: a name-change deed, an endorsement in a passport, a national ID card or residence permit from a non-EU country, or whenever a notary, court or registry specifically asks.

Name differences cause most of the trouble. If your birth certificate, marriage certificate and passport spell your name differently, a translated deed poll can bridge the gap, so the official sees one person rather than three. Tell us about any differences when ordering and we'll make sure each spelling is reproduced exactly as each document shows it.

  • A deed poll or change of name deed explaining why your name differs between documents
  • The observations page of a passport, such as an 'also known as' endorsement
  • National ID cards and residence permits issued outside the EU
  • Identity documents requested by a Spanish notary, court or Registro Civil

Can you translate a deed poll into Spanish?

Yes. A deed poll or change of name deed is translated in full and signed by a traductor jurado. Some Spanish offices also want it apostilled, so check before ordering.

Enrolled deed polls are recorded with the courts in England and Wales; unenrolled ones are simply signed in front of witnesses. A Spanish office may treat the two differently, and an unenrolled deed poll may need certifying by a solicitor or notary before the FCDO will apostille it. We translate whichever version the office accepts, including witness details and any seals.

The deed poll is one of the few documents in a Spanish file where every line earns its keep. In one page, it explains why the person on your passport has a different surname from the one on your degree.

Do Spanish notaries need a translated passport when I buy property?

Usually not. A Spanish notary identifies foreign buyers from their passport and NIE. A translation tends to come up only when an identity document isn't a passport or when names don't match across documents.

Buying a home in Spain means signing the escritura before a notary, who checks identity with the thoroughness the profession is known for. Notaries also commonly ask about marital status, which is where a translated marriage certificate can come in, and about how the purchase is paid. If the notary asks for anything translated, ask which documents and in what form, then send us that list.

How much does a sworn ID translation into Spanish cost?

£48.00 per page, charged in pounds sterling, delivered within 2 working days. Passport pages, ID cards and deed polls are usually one or two pages each.

Every document includes a quality check, the traductor jurado's signature and 2 free revisions. For an ID card or residence permit, upload both sides. For a passport, upload only the pages the office asked about, usually the data page and any observations page. Start on the online quote form, or read about apostille translation if your deed poll needs one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sworn Passport and ID Translation into Spanish

Do I need a translation of my UK passport for Spain?

Usually not. Spanish offices generally accept a UK passport and a photocopy without translation. Check with the office if you've been told otherwise.

What's the difference between an NIE and a TIE?

The NIE is your foreigner identity number. The TIE is the physical residence card issued to non-EU residents, including British nationals living in Spain, and it shows that number.

Can you translate a residence permit or national ID card into Spanish?

Yes. Upload both sides and we'll translate the whole card.

Do you translate deed polls?

Yes, enrolled and unenrolled deed polls and change of name deeds, signed by a traductor jurado.

Will you change my name to the Spanish two-surname format?

No. Names are reproduced exactly as they appear on each document. How a Spanish authority records your surnames is its decision.

What if my documents spell my name differently?

Tell us when you order. We reproduce each spelling exactly and can translate a deed poll or other document that explains the difference.

Who signs the translation?

A traductor-intérprete jurado appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

How long does it take?

Up to 2 working days. There is no rush option for sworn Spanish translations.
