An employment letter is usually one page and a company stamp, and it carries more weight than documents ten times its length. For a spouse visa it's the document that anchors the sponsor's salary. For a visitor visa it shows you have a job to return to. For a mortgage it confirms the income your payslips show is secure. If it's written in Spanish, Polish, Chinese or Arabic, nobody in the UK can rely on it until it's translated.

We translate employer letters, contracts, references and certificates of employment from any country, with the letterhead, signatory and company stamp rendered in full. Most people order them alongside payslip translation for a spouse visa or as part of a mortgage application.

Do I need my employment letter translated for a UK visa?

Yes, if it isn't in English or Welsh. UKVI requires a certified translation of every foreign-language document you submit, and employer letters are central evidence for spouse and partner visas and commonly used for visitor visas.

Where it matters most is the spouse and partner route. A salaried sponsor's payslips have to be backed by a letter from the employer confirming the job and salary, and caseworkers check the payslips and bank statements against it.

Visitor visa applicants often submit a letter from their employer confirming their job, their approved leave and that they'll return to work: strong evidence that the trip is temporary, and proof that somebody, somewhere, is expecting you back on Monday. For Skilled Worker applications the key document is the UK sponsor's certificate of sponsorship, but if a caseworker asks for evidence of your previous experience, reference letters from past employers are the usual answer, often alongside a degree and transcript translation.

  • Spouse and partner visas — the employer letter behind the payslips
  • Visitor visas — confirmation of employment and approved leave
  • Skilled Worker — reference letters if experience is questioned
  • ILR and extensions — current employment evidence
  • Dependant applications — the main applicant's employment details

What must a spouse visa employer letter confirm?

For a salaried sponsor, the employer letter should confirm the employment and gross annual salary, how long the person has worked there, the period they've been paid that salary, and whether the job is permanent, fixed-term or through an agency.

If the letter is in another language, the translation has to carry all of that across precisely: a mistranslated contract type or start date can undermine an otherwise strong file. We translate the letterhead, the body, the signatory's name and job title, and any company stamp, so the caseworker can see who issued it and on whose authority.

If your employer's letter doesn't cover every point, ask them to reissue it before you translate; it's cheaper than translating twice, and HR departments are faster at reissuing letters than caseworkers are at overlooking gaps. Then make sure it lines up with your payslips and bank statements; caseworkers read all three together.

  • Employment and gross annual salary
  • Length of employment
  • Period over which that salary has been paid
  • Type of employment: permanent, fixed-term or agency
  • Issued on company letterhead, signed, ideally stamped

What is a certificate of employment, and do you translate them?

A certificate of employment is an official record confirming your job, dates and sometimes salary, issued by an employer or a state body. Many countries use them instead of a free-form letter. Yes, we translate them from every country.

Formats vary, and every country is quietly convinced its own is the obvious one. Spain's informe de vida laboral comes from the social security system and lists every period of employment. Poland's świadectwo pracy is issued when a job ends. Chinese employers issue 在职证明 (proof of current employment) and 收入证明 (proof of income). Romanian employers issue an adeverință de salariat. Gulf employers often issue salary certificates in Arabic.

We translate each in full, including registration numbers, codes and stamps, and add a brief note where a term has no direct UK equivalent, so a caseworker or underwriter knows exactly what the document is. Applying for an Australian skilled visa as well? Australia generally expects NAATI certified translations: see employment document translation for Australia.

Do mortgage lenders need my employment contract translated?

Yes, if it's not in English. Lenders use the contract or an employer letter to confirm your salary, start date, contract type and whether you're still in a probation period — all of which affect how much they'll lend.

Underwriters read contracts for detail: is the job permanent, is there a probation period, how is the bonus structured, are allowances guaranteed? A translation that summarises rather than translates can hide the very clauses the lender needs. We translate every clause, including the ones nobody has read since the day it was signed.

If your income is paid abroad or in a foreign currency, the lender will usually want the contract alongside payslips and tax returns. See mortgage document translation for the full pack.

How much does employment letter translation cost?

Employment letter translation costs from £15.59 per page. Most employer letters and certificates of employment are a single page; contracts are usually several.

There's no surcharge for language or script, and the price includes the statement of accuracy and PDF delivery within 24 business hours. A one-page employer letter plus six single-page payslips is seven pages, £109.13 in total.

Same-day rush is available at £29.99 per page if your application or offer is up against a deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Employment Letter Translation UK

Does the company stamp need to be translated?

Yes. Stamps, seals and signatures are described and any text on them is translated, so the caseworker or lender can see who issued and authorised the letter.

My employer letter is bilingual. Does it need translating?

If any substantive content, such as the salary, dates, contract type or signatory, appears only in another language, yes. If every part is fully in English, no translation is needed.

Can you translate my full employment contract?

Yes. Contracts are translated clause by clause at the same per-page rate, including annexes such as salary schedules or bonus terms.

Do you translate reference letters for UK employers?

Yes. UK employers and recruitment agencies sometimes ask for translated references or certificates of employment during onboarding. The same certified translation works.

How long does it take?

Most employer letters and certificates are delivered within 24 business hours. Same-day rush is available for urgent applications.

Do I need a notarised translation?

Not for UKVI: a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy is what the Home Office asks for. If another body specifically requires notarisation, we offer that separately.

Will the translation use the same name spelling as my passport?

Yes. Tell us your passport spelling when you order and we'll use it consistently across your employer letter, payslips and every other document in the order.

Can I translate my employer letter together with other visa documents?

Yes, and it's the better approach. One order means consistent names, dates and terminology across the whole file.
