Which Spanish ministry recognises UK university degrees?
The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities handles homologación and equivalencia of foreign university degrees under Royal Decree 889/2022.
UK degree certificates, transcripts, A-levels and GCSEs translated into Spanish and signed by a traductor jurado, for homologación, equivalencia, jobs and study in Spain.
A sworn degree and transcript translation into Spanish is a traducción jurada of your certificates and academic records, signed by a traductor jurado appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Spain asks for it when you apply to have a UK qualification recognised (homologación or equivalencia), enrol at a Spanish university or apply for a job that requires a recognised degree.
We translate degree certificates, transcripts, diploma supplements and school qualifications at £48.00 per page within 2 working days. Moving for work? Your payslips and employment letters may need translating too, and most residence visas also ask for a translated police certificate.
Spain
Yes. Under Royal Decree 889/2022, foreign degree certificates and academic records submitted for homologación or equivalencia must come with an official translation into Spanish, and a translation by a sworn translator authorised or registered in Spain is one of the accepted forms.
Recognition of university degrees is handled by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The decree also accepts translations made by Spanish consulates and a few other official routes, but for applicants living in the UK a traducción jurada is usually the most straightforward, because it doesn't depend on a consular appointment.
Since Brexit, UK qualifications no longer benefit from the legalisation exemption for documents issued in EU and EEA states, so the paperwork now includes an apostille as well as a translation. A UK degree is now handled like any other degree from outside the EU, which nobody at your graduation ceremony mentioned.
Homologación recognises a foreign degree as equivalent to a specific Spanish degree that gives access to a regulated profession. Equivalencia (declaración de equivalencia) recognises a foreign degree as equivalent to a Spanish academic level in a field of study, without the professional effects.
Which you need depends on what you plan to do. Practising a regulated profession usually means homologación; a master's, a public-sector exam or a job that simply asks for a recognised degree may only need equivalencia. Both procedures ask for the degree certificate and the academic record showing subjects, credits or hours and grades, so the transcript tends to be the longest part of the translation.
School qualifications are separate. Recognising A-levels or GCSEs against the Spanish Bachiller or ESO is handled by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (some regions process certain applications themselves), and it also asks for official translations.
Yes, for recognition procedures. Documents from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland must be legalised, and for the UK that means a Hague apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office. Get the apostille first, then the translation.
The FCDO apostilles the signature of a UK public official, solicitor or notary, so a university-issued certificate often has to be certified by a solicitor or notary before it can be apostilled. Check the FCDO's guidance for your document. We don't issue apostilles, but we translate them along with the certificate, and our apostille translation page explains how that works.
They're translated faithfully, not converted. 'First Class Honours', 'Upper Second Class' or an A* stay as they are, with their Spanish translation, and the Spanish authority decides how they compare with the Spanish scale of 0 to 10.
Translators don't convert grades. A sworn translator certifying that your 2:1 is 'un 8,5' would be adding evidence that the university never issued. Spain has its own procedure for working out an equivalent average grade (nota media), and it relies on the full transcript with every module and mark, which matters far more than the certificate with your name in calligraphy.
Credit systems get the same treatment. UK credits, ECTS figures and module codes are reproduced exactly, so the Spanish evaluator can compare content and workload with the Spanish degree. A diploma supplement, if your university issued one, is worth including.
£48.00 per page, charged in pounds sterling, delivered within 2 working days. A degree certificate is usually one page; transcripts vary with the number of modules.
Every document includes a quality check, the traductor jurado's signature and 2 free revisions. Upload every page of the transcript, plus any apostilles, on the online quote form to see your total before paying. Highly qualified professional permits often ask for qualifications as well as translated employment contracts, so it can be worth doing both together.
